I had a few dramatic cards of and titled as "Irish Sunsets",
and decided to pun on the sunset as death. I also wanted to make more
beautiful pictures.
In this one I consciously tried to make it more like a piece of religious
art, obviously slightly cruciform, and I hoped a bit like an illuminated
manuscript or a piece of stained glass, perhaps also in the style of telling
a story in a scene with multiple elements.
The cars were from kids' collectibles I'd been hoarding, the landscapes
from a Northern Ireland Tourist Board thing on golfcourses, the sunsets
more Hinde, and the figures came from toy packaging, probably Chinese,
with that usual mix of elation and horror.
A wierd thing about this picture, and though it's along time ago now,
this is the way I believe it was, was that I made the picture in one of
my common all-night sessions, and remember wondering whilst I was making
it what exactly was going on between the figures, the balaclava'd ones
shooting at the the other masked men (who are actually sort of robber
figures), but it seemed to be working as a composition, and the point
of working like that was that i did as little conscious thinking as possible.
However, in the morning the main item in the radio news was that the Provos
had taken three of their own men and shot them in South Armagh the previous
night.
